Youth and Education : SHORE

New North Church Invites Children & Teens to the “SHORE”

New North Church, 1 Lincoln Street, Hingham, is launching a new church school and Christian education program called “SHORE” starting Sunday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m.  SHORE is a new approach to Sunday educational experiences for New North Church. Members, friends and anyone interested in exploring a new concept in church or Sunday School is invited to participate .

SHORE stands for Show How Our Relationships Expand — relationships with God, with ourselves, with family, with others and with our world. Classes will be held in the church parlor and upstairs for parents, children and others interested in exploring the SHORE. The program will be led by Andrew Kjorlaug and staffed by church volunteers on a rotating basis.

Andrew Kjorlaug - Youth Minister

Kjorlaug, who is the new youth minister at New North, served for the past two years as director of music and Christian education at Hillcrest United Methodist Church in Antioch, Tennessee.  During his time in Nashville, he was actively involved in children's ministry and in English as a second language ministry.  A graduate of Arkansas State University, he is currently enrolled at Boston University School of Theology where he is working on his Masters Degree in Divinity.

The curriculum is based on an internet oriented model that helps leaders use the Bible and other resource materials by educating through a variety of structured activities, which can include drama, cooking, video materials, and field trips. Rotation Curriculum was developed by the Presbyterian Church with the support of Geneva Press and linked to an internet concept where churches and leaders share lesson plans and their ‘best practices’ in teaching thoughtful Christian education programs.

Rev. Turpie says that the "rotational curriculum is a Christian based program that moves across geographical and denominational boundaries and uses some of the most creative practices to engage children and families in thoughtful and fascinating Christian education."

Classes will run from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 when children will be invited to join the rest of the congregation in worship to share their learning experiences and to interact with the message.  New North’s Sunday worship service concludes around 11:30.

Parents may drop of their children at 10:00 and pick them up afterwards but we invite them to join us for coffee and refreshments in the vestibule before the service and stay for worship experience, which begins at 10:30 a.m.
