Rev. Liz Walker on Darfur: Sun, March 16, 2008
Rev. Liz Walker, the former WBZ-TV news anchor, is coming to Hingham's New North Church on Palm Sunday, March 16, to speak about her humanitarian work in Darfur.
Rev. Walker will show some of her video work on Darfur at a special luncheon in the second-floor ballroom of New North's parish house wing. There is no charge for the luncheon, though attendees will be requested to make voluntary donations to "My Sister's Keeper," a relief organization co-founded by Rev. Walker.
Rev. Walker is an ordained elder at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal church in Jamaica Plain, where she leads the youth worship ministry. Prior to taking up her ministry, she worked at WBZ News for 21 years and was recognized as one of Boston's most popular television journalists.
In the summer of 2001, Rev. Walker traveled with Bethel pastors Ray and Gloria Hammond on a fact-finding mission on the controversial slave trade in Sudan in East Africa . Moved by the human rights atrocities she witnessed there, Rev. Walker co-founded the humanitarian organization "My Sister's Keeper," which focuses on providing advocacy and support for economic and educational initiatives in Sudan.
Rev. Walker shot her own video footage during that first journey and produced a number of television specials including one that earned the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award from the New England Radio Television News Director's Association in 2002. She has since returned to Sudan a number of times and has completed a new documentary called "Glory from the God" which profiles Reverend Gloria's inspiring leadership in the movement to end genocide in Darfur.

2005 graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Rev. Walker has received numerous honors for her extensive community service work. She currently is a member of the Kitchen Cabinet of One Family Organization to end homelessness in Massachusetts. She also serves on the Board of Trustees for Andover Newton Theological Seminary and the Advisory Board for the New England Chapter of the United Nations International Children's Educational Fund.
